Sears has officially closed its doors in Waco.

Serving the community for 90 years March 10 marked the last day after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October .

Many were out trying to find last minute deals while thinking back to the times they shopped at Sears often.

“I used to get my tires here, my appliances, ya know wedge shoes which I came for today, hair cuts. I mean I feel like over the years I’ve gotten purchased everything you could possibly purchase,” Summer Shine said.

Having help with her last minute haul, Ronnie Aletky calls Sears an “American Institution.” They’ll miss having the one stop shop around.

“You’re just kinda always used to seeing Sears everywhere you go and its uh not going to be a thing anymore it’s not going to be one of those things that we see,” Aletky said.

Most sad to see it go, they come back for one last time to see the store practically empty.

“It’s kind of been a staple of Waco, and its kinda sad seeing it go, it’s really sad inside everything’s gone. Fixtures and everything.” Aaron Gonzalez said.

An article in Sunday’s New York Times says, department stores need to give shoppers a reason to visit.

The president and chief executive of Barneys saying: “..It is more about how we create an experience in the store that is more entertainment focused.”

Experts say sears must meet that challenge or it will see more sales like this, and stores will need to leverage more of the personal information they collect on us and our purchases.

With the growth of online shopping, consumers might move towards a more convenient route.

“Amazon is taking over,” Aletky said.

The Killeen location is also set to close.

With these two recent closures the Associated Press reports only about one hundred Sears stores remain across Texas.
