A major makeup retail company is getting behind a new movement that invests more in Black-owned businesses. Sephora announced on Wednesday that they are joining the 15 percent pledge to generate 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses.
15 Percent Pledge has been calling out major companies on social media for not stepping up and making a commitment to Black businesses despite the high percentage of Black customers. On June 9, the account tweeted specifically to Sephora urging them to join the 15 percent pledge. They chose 15 percent to represent the percentage of Black people in the United States.
Sephora is the first national retail brand to get behind the 15 percent pledge. Wholefoods, Target, and Shopbop have also been targeted by the orchestraters of the movement.
Sephora has agreed to the three phases of the 15 percent pledge including taking stock of current percentage of shelf space and contracts for Black-owned business, identifying blind spots and disparities, and lastly publishing a plan to grow the share of black business.
