The Jubilee Food Market started on a $51,000 donation four years ago and has since grown into a community grocery store, giving back each and every day to help those in need.

It first started out as a solution to a problem. Many living over in that area had to travel miles to the nearest grocery store. What may be a 10 minute drive for you is an hour walk to someone else.

For Thomas ‘Mickey’ Henry, he gets around via scooter and usually had to pay just to grocery stop at the closest store.

“Well, I usually would have to pay $20 for someone to take me to the store. Now it don’t cost me nothing but time,” Henry said.

Henry has been visiting Jubilee since they opened in 2016 and is thankful for the shorter and free 10 minute scooter drive.

“I don’t have to worry about way across town to the store, so I was glad they opened this place up. It really benefited the neighborhood,” Henry said.

In four years, this non-profit grocery store managed to raise $650,000 in their “Oasis Stock.” Everything purchased from this store, all that money, goes back into the community to help those in need.

Volunteer Teresa Almanza has been giving her time to the market for two years.

“Because that’s what Jesus Christ wants from each and every one of us,” Almanza said.

She loves donating her time and helping others, as she says that’s what the world needs.

Henry is always greeted with a warm welcome visiting the market and never misses a chance to remember things can always be worse.

“I’m blessed by the best and too blessed to be stressed,” Henry said.

The market also made sure to give back during Thanksgiving. As we’re in a pandemic, many are in more need than ever before. The Jubilee Market was able to partner with St. Jerome Catholic Church and purchase 150 full Thanksgiving meals for families in need.

Jubilee Food Market is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
