After getting the thumbs up from the Waco City Council and the McLennan County Commissioners to add a bond proposal to the November ballot, the Cameron Park Zoo released a rendering of its $14.5 million proposed expansion.

The expansion project will include Penguin Shores, a habitat for critically endangered South African black-footed penguins, an Education and Veterinary Complex, and renovations to the Zoo’s existing animal commissary and hoofstock barn.

Zoo staff made a presentation to city council last week and the commissioners Tuesday.

Duane McGregor, the Marketing and Public Relations Manager, said the bond will be tax neutral, meaning it will not impact property taxes.

The zoo opened in 1993 and has more than 1,600 animals and 70 exhibits spread across 52 acres.

Since opening it has welcomed more than 4.9 million guests.

The bond will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
