Cowboys Are Reportedly Firing Head Coach Jason Garrett

The Jason Garrett era in Dallas has come to an end, ESPN reports.

Source: #Cowboys Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones have moved slowly and with “abundance of care and respect” for Jason Garrett. That phase expected to conclude soon with Garrett not part of organization. Next phase to involve candidate interviews will begin quickly thereafter.

One thing people should know regarding #Cowboys deliberate and confusing process: Jerry and Stephen Jones would not be operating in this manner if they had any indication they were risking HC candidates they desire most to other teams.

The decision comes after the Cowboys finished with an 8-8 record in the 2019 campaign, falling short in their quest for an NFC East title and missing the playoffs entirely. Garrett’s fate was most likely sealed with a Week 16 defeat at the hands of an injury-riddled Philadelphia Eagles team, when Dallas controlled their own playoff destiny with a victory. The loss only fueled speculation that Garrett’s days were numbered.

Even though the Cowboys played well against Washington in what would be their final game of the season, it was all for naught once the Eagles defeated the New York Giants to secure the division crown.

Shortly after Dallas was officially eliminated, owner Jerry Jones was vague in his response to questions about Garrett’s job security.

“We’ll have several busy days … ahead. I don’t have any comments … to share about any pending decisions about coaches, players, anything within the organization at this time.”

Garrett was elevated from offensive coordinator to interim head coach of the Cowboys, replacing Wade Phillips who started the 2010 season with a 1-7 record. He finished with a 85-67 record where he made just three playoff appearances and was eliminated in the divisional round each time.
